Solar panels serve as a zero-emission and entirely renewable energy source throughout their operational lifespan. Once installed, these panels release no greenhouse gases or harmful toxins into the atmosphere while generating electricity. The beauty of solar energy lies in its renewability, as it relies on the boundless power of the sun, ensuring that we won’t deplete natural resources. Although New Zealand boasts a significant proportion of renewable electricity (approximately 84% and rising), some parts of the power grid still draw from non-renewable resources like coal and oil, depleting them in the process.

Once solar panels are installed, they require minimal maintenance, resulting in long-term cost savings on energy bills. Even on cloudy days, solar panels remain operational, although they achieve optimal performance in regions with high sunshine hours, such as Nelson/Marlborough. Nevertheless, solar panels are functional across the country, regardless of the weather conditions.

Considering the long-term perspective, solar panels present a durable and sustainable solution. With a life expectancy of around 25 years and minimal maintenance requirements, they offer a reliable energy generation option for an extended period. The cost of installing a solar PV system has seen a steady decline over the years. If it doesn’t currently appear financially feasible for you, it might make more sense in the future.
